  7.     Olympic Games come and go, but the decathlon world record
  8. stood for eight years, until American athlete Dan O'Brien
  9. smashed it to bits last week in Talence, France. The old record,
  10. 8,847 points scored by Daley Thompson of Great Britain, had long
  11. been considered a Mount Everest of track and field. For Dan,
  12. who unexpectedly sat out the Barcelona Games after failing to
  13. qualify in the pole vault, the 44-point margin of victory had
  14. the sweet taste of comeback: "This may not have been the
  15. Olympics, but I'm really happy." Next March, indomitable Dan
  16. goes for the heptathlon record.

  21.     Equal parts joy and relief seemed to wash over Milwaukee
  22. Brewer Robin Yount after spanking his 3,000th career hit and
  23. becoming only the 17th player (and third youngest) in baseball
  24. history to achieve that lofty mark. "I've taken quite a bit of
  25. heat," said the 37-year-old shortstop and centerfielder,
  26. referring to the ribbing he got from his teammates during his
  27. chase. He had gone hitless in his last seven at bats. Yount will
  28. go down in the record books: so will Cleveland hurler Jose Mesa,
  29. as the guy who threw the pitch that Yount swatted into history.
